| Bydgoskie Zakłady Elektromechaniczne “BELMA” S.A. is one of the oldest industrial plants in the Kujawy & Pomerania Region. The company history dates back to mid-19th century. The company’s progenitor was a locksmith’s shop established in 1868 by Karol Fiebrandt, located in Bydgoszcz at 11 Dworcowa St. In 1898, the shop was moved to Okole district where it had favourable conditions for further development. At the beginning, the shop repaired and manufactured simple farm machines, and with time it switched to manufacturing of railway security devices. In 1899, the shop’s legal status changed and it became a limited liability company. Over the course of the years, the shop was transformed into a factory which developed dynamically to expand its manufacturing profile and introduce newer an newer product lines. In the first years after the World War II, the factory, which had a status of a state-owned company, continued manufacturing of railway security devices and explosion-proof equipment for the mining industry. In 1951, the factory’s manufacturing profile was significantly changed – manufacturing of railway signaling devices was moved to Żary plant, and our company focused on manufacturing of explosion-proof equipment for the mining and chemical industries, which became one of BELMA’s primary lines of business. In the years 1951–1954, in Białe Błota on the outskirts of Bydgoszcz, a new plant was established where manufacturing of precision products for the army and of horns for the automotive industry was launched. | April 16, 1958 – the company name changed from Bydgoska Fabryka Sygnałów Kolejowych to Bydgoskie Zakłady Elektromechaniczne “Belma”, under a directive from the Minister of Heavy Industry. In the subsequent years, the aforementioned 3 businesses were continued and developed. The company had mare than 2,000 employees. Moderately stable manufacturing profile and large market ensured security of employment for people. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, the manufacturing was concentrated, and the company’s head office was moved to a branch located in Białe Błota, at Łochowska street. Branches at Grunwaldzka street and Graniczna street were closed down.
